I type, I write, I blog... (nov 2009)

Dear Blog,
Nov, the second last month of the year. haha.. I am feeling the Christmas mood. As always Christmas seems to start earlier in Singapore as the lightings and decorations are up as early as late oct! My guests actually thought that we celebrated christmas earlier in Singapore. I play host to 3 germans and a turkish. There are actually Shu Han (a friend whom I met in the LA in may 2009)'s friends who are having their exchange program in NTU (not the one in Singapore but National Taiwan University) lol.. It's kind of random! However, they brought me the tripod from Taipei that Shu han was supposed to send it to me. Thanks Shu Han! It's amazing!

They wanted to go to the Singapore Botanical Garden! (oh my god! I can't actually remember when was the last time I was there) I went to surf the website a litte just in case they have any questions that I can't answer.. haha..

GOTTA GO MY OWN WAY

I gotta say what's on my mind

Something about us,doesn't seem right... these days

Life keeps getting in the way

Whenever we try, somehow the plan is always rearranged

It's so hard to say

But I gotta do what's best for me,You'll be okay...

I've got to move on,and be who I am,

I just don't belong here,I hope you understand,

We might find a place in this world, someday

But at least for now.. I gotta go my own way....

Changed for the better?

My colleagues have been telling me that I have changed. However, the question is have I changed for the better?

Like what Eric always say Evelyn Tay had been an observer. That was true when I contracted 2 years ago, I wasn't a believer of financial planning I thought it was merely insurance. Over time, I recongised that Financial Planning is more than insurance and how is it related to our life. Basically, there are four major segments - Risk Management, Wealth Accumulation, Wealth Preservation and Wealth Distribution, each marks a different stage of life.

Being in the business of financial planning, it's more than just revenue. I am able to educate and create the public awareness on the importance of financial planning. At the same time, being able to make an impact on people's life is the source of my satisfaction.

An incident that further enforced my belief in good financial planning was the witnessing of an old man being forced to alight by the bus driver because he was unable to afford a bus ride to his designated location. Like always, I am waiting for bus 66 to go to work at a bus-stop on Jurong Town Hall Rd. I took notice of an old man who is poorly dressed. As we were boarding the bus, I saw him talking to the bus driver but not too sure what. I proceeded to the back of the bus. The old man took a seat near the driver and started running his fingers through his pockets and found some coins. I saw him handing the coins to the driver. However, this is what he gets "AH PEK AH! THE BUS RIDE IS $1.60 NOT 30CENTS. GET OFF THE BUS!" The conversation was loud enough to be heard from where I was seated. The bus driver demanded the old man to get off the bus. The old man was unwilling but still. I wouldn't start pointing fingers at the bus driver as he is just doing his job. Living in a practical society, being able to afford for basic necessities is simply essential, especially in the years of retirement. He is certainly not asking for much! It's a bus ride that he can't afford! We like to talk about pride, ego, face and etc, imagine yourself in the shoes of the old man. Wouldn't it be worst than dying if that happens to any of us?

Evelyn, are you sure? This is Singapore you mean we still have people like that? Don't he has kids or family members to take care of him? Come on! Let's face it, having kids doesn't mean that your retirement life will be well taken care of. What make you think that your kids will definitely repay and take care of you? No one is ever going to come up to you and say hey if you can't afford you can have it for free! Even if it ever happens, you will be living with empathies of others. It's your call!
